City walls

The restoration of the city walls and improvement of the adjoining promenade

As Mostar's importance as a crossroads and commercial centre grew after the sixteenth century, a walled enclave was built to protect the houses and shops of the bazaar area. The walls were built on both sides of the Neretva River, and were made of random stones embedded in lime mortar. Today, only a small portion of this enclave survives along the Kriva Cuprija street and the Ramica street, respectively on the western and eastern sides of Mostar.

The wall remains along the Kriva Cuprija street measure approximately 71 metres in length with an height which varies between 3 and 7 metres. The remains along Ramica street follow closely the slope of the terrain up from the riverbank, and measure 78 metres in length and 4 to 6 metres in height. Both sections of these walls are adjoined by pedestrian thoroughfares which, however, are unpaved and poorly maintained.

AKTC/WMF propose to restore the remains of the walls on both sides of the river as a significant evidence of the city's past and to improve, at the same time, the pedestrian thoroughfares as a public promenade for residents and visitors.

Following a detailed condition survey of the existing conditions, restoration of the walls will include the following treatments (all treatments will be made according to international restoration standards, while proper care will be taken to distinguish new interventions and replacements from the original stone work):

1. Estimation of the works

The measured works will be estimated in the net unit prices as it has been defined in this document.

2. Scope of the works

In conformity with the conditions of the Contract, the prices in the bill of quantities cover all the expenditures of the contractor without any exception, for the realization of all the measured works and in particular: the expenditures of installation of the equipment, machines, material supply machines, work costs, material for building-in, transport, driving to the storage area, costs of the work protection, marking of the site, insurance, the costs of the necessary studies, tax costs, customs duty costs and the other fees as well, the individual costs, profit, contributions, running costs, and all the other costs which are the immediate consequence of the works in question.

The abovementioned price covers all the risks and the wilful adjustment of the bill of quantities for the measured works whose nature and the difficulties are completely familiar to the contractor.

Organization of the site and the abandonment of the site with all the necessary actions should also be covered with the price of the works as well.

3. The quantities which are not the subject of the payment

If by negligence or with an indolent behaviour while implementing works the contractor presents to the Client the larger quantities than the ones which are stipulated in the Contract, only the quantities which have been stipulated in the Contract will be taken into account.
